Ask before you sign

  1. Speak to at least 3 franchisees who have run an outlet for 2+ years and see their actual monthly sales and profit — a franchisor making money doesn't mean its franchisees do.
  2. Ask for the one-time franchise fee in writing, and whether any part is refundable.
  3. Ask for the royalty and any marketing-fund fee, and how they're calculated (on sales or profit).

Reputation & News

What the press, courts and real franchisees or customers have said about Lakme Salon — summarised by us, with every source linked.

Bombay High Court refused a franchisee's bid to stop nearby Lakmé salons (Feb 2012)

In a franchisee's petition against Lakme Lever Pvt Ltd the court read the 2010 franchise agreement as protecting only the franchisee's defined exclusive area and refused an interim injunction against the franchisor opening salons elsewhere in Gurgaon, noting its views were prima facie and leaving the dispute to the arbitrator. The case is 14 years old and concerns a 2010 agreement.

Competition Commission order on the same franchisee's complaint (Feb 2013)

The CCI recorded an order under section 26(2) of the Competition Act (Case No. 73 of 2012) on the franchisee's information alleging that the franchisor's size let it set terms freely. Section 26(2) is the provision under which the Commission closes a matter when it finds no prima facie case; we could open only the order's heading and opening paragraphs, not its reasoning.

Key Terms at Lakme Salon

The clauses that shape day-to-day running and your exit — read these before the fee.

Territory
A 2012 Bombay High Court order refusing one franchisee interim relief read that franchisee's 2010 agreement as protecting only a defined exclusive area (0.75 km radius per the order), and held the franchisor free to open salons in other unrestricted areas. This is one franchisee's 2010 agreement, not the current contract.
Who pays for what
Every salon launch is jointly supported by Lakmē Lever and the partner with a 'pre-aligned marketing budget basis salon format', run as a 90-day plan from 15 days before launch to 75 days after. The budget is not published.

About the Brand

Brand USP

Lakmē Salon is run by Lakmē Lever Pvt Ltd, which describes itself as a 100% subsidiary of Hindustan Unilever, with salons in 200+ cities by its own count.

Parent CompanyHindustan Unilever Limited (listed); Lakmē Lever Pvt Ltd is described on its own site as a 100% subsidiary
HeadquartersMumbai, Maharashtra
Lakmē Salon is a chain of beauty salons offering hair, skin, make-up, hands-and-feet and nail services, with services for women and men. It is run by Lakmē Lever Private Limited, which says on its own site that it is a 100% subsidiary of Hindustan Unilever Ltd, and says the first salon opened in 1980. Its pages claim 450+ to 500+ salons, 300+ to 360+ franchise partners and 4,000+ experts. Our recount of its salon locator sitemaps on 25 Oct 2026 found 520 salon pages across 210 city listings, owned and franchised together; the brand's own claims are lower, so the two should not be read as the same measure. Lakmē Salon's live pages invite applications through an 'Own a Lakme Salon' form and describe its support: site evaluation, salon design, IT and audits, staff hiring and training help, and a 90-day launch marketing plan. They publish no investment, fee, royalty, term or returns. The only investment figure the brand has shown is on a page that has since been taken down; it is given, dated, in the investment note and is not a current price. The live form still asks whether the applicant has a Rs 60 lakh budget and 900 sq ft. What to watch: the brand's own counts differ page to page, and the royalty, fees, term and exit terms are not public, so ask for the full agreement and speak to existing franchisees. In 2012 the Bombay High Court refused a franchisee's request for an interim injunction against the franchisor opening nearby salons, reading that franchisee's 2010 agreement as protecting only a defined exclusive area (the court's remarks were prima facie and the dispute went to arbitration). A Competition Commission complaint by the same franchisee ended in an order under section 26(2) of the Competition Act on 19 Feb 2013 (the provision under which the Commission closes a matter when it sees no prima facie case); the page we could open does not show the reasoning, so it is not stated here. No financial statements for Lakmē Lever were readable here, and a franchisor's accounts would not show what a salon earns.
