Vadilal name: Bombay High Court gives Mumbai branch interim protection; Vadilal Industries appeals

Reported Jul and Aug 2026: a single judge held, for interim purposes, that the Mumbai branch's right to use the Vadilal name in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and the former undivided Andhra Pradesh appears to stem from a 1993 family settlement and not a terminable licence. The Ahmedabad side had sent a 26 May 2026 notice to end the registered user agreement, citing quality lapses and alleged food-safety violations (allegations by that side, not findings). The court said it was not recognising a final right.

California Proposition 65 notice over lead in a Vadilal shrikhand sold in the US

A Proposition 65 60-day notice filed 5 Mar 2026 by a private enforcer (Public Health Enforcement Advocates, LLC) names Vadilal Industries (USA) Inc. and Vadilal Industries Ltd. over lead in Vadilal Alphonso Mango Shrikhand. This is a notice of alleged violation in the US, not a finding, and concerns an export product. The AG's page records a settlement dated 27 Jul 2026; its terms were not read.

About the Brand

Brand USP

A 1907-origin ice cream maker; the listed company whose filing names its website reports audited annual results to the stock exchanges.

HeadquartersAhmedabad
Vadilal is an Ahmedabad ice cream brand. Its own brand story dates the first hand-cranked ice cream to 1907 and the first parlours to 1926. Vadilal Industries Limited, the listed company whose NSE filing names vadilalicecreams.com as its website, filed FY26 consolidated revenue from operations of Rs 1,503.12 crore and a consolidated net profit of Rs 155.11 crore (NSE filing, 27 May 2026). Those are group figures; they say nothing about what a parlour or a distributor earns. The franchise page says Vadilal has 'a vast network of more than 1,25,000 dealers across India' and invites readers to 'partner with us', but it is only an enquiry form (name, phone, email, 'interested in', message). It publishes no investment, fee, royalty, area, format, territory or return figure, and does not say which partner programme is currently open, so we list the status as unknown. The brand's locator is headed 'company owned parlours' and lists 18 of them, all in Gujarat (Ahmedabad 14, Vadodara 2, Anand 2); its cafe page shows a single 'Now For Ever' cafe in Ahmedabad. What to watch: nothing about the partner terms is published; ask for the written terms and speak to existing partners before paying anything. The Vadilal name is also in a family dispute: in June 2026 the Bombay High Court (order of 30 June 2026) gave the Mumbai branch of the family interim protection to keep using the Vadilal name in its claimed territories, and Vadilal Industries, a respondent, has appealed (reported Aug 2026). The order also bars Vadilal Industries from licensing or otherwise dealing with the disputed rights while the arbitration is pending, and the appeal outcome is not known to us. Separately, a private enforcer filed a California Proposition 65 notice in March 2026 alleging lead in a Vadilal shrikhand sold in the US (a notice of alleged violation, not a finding; a settlement was recorded in July 2026).

Why invest in Vadilal?

- Vadilal's own brand story dates its first ice cream to 1907 and its first parlours to 1926. - Vadilal Industries Limited, the listed company whose filing names vadilalicecreams.com as its website, got an unmodified audit opinion on its FY26 results (group net profit Rs 155.11 crore). These are group figures and say nothing about what a partner earns. - The brand's franchise page says it has a network of more than 1,25,000 dealers across India (brand claim, undated; dealers are not franchise outlets).
