Ask before you sign

  1. Speak to at least 3 franchisees who have run an outlet for 2+ years and see their actual monthly sales and profit — a franchisor making money doesn't mean its franchisees do.
  2. Get a written, itemised cost breakdown — the brand hasn't published one.
  3. Ask for every upfront payment in writing — deposit, onboarding, equipment or stock — and which parts are refundable.

Our Estimates

  • All-in cost to open a MakeMyTrip holiday store

    ₹12–25 L*

A 300–500 sq ft high-street or mall-front unit: fit-out to MakeMyTrip's standard design at about ₹1,500–2,500 per sq ft (₹4.5–12.5 L), IT and furniture ₹1–2 L, rent deposit of 3–6 months (₹1–3 L), the unpublished region-specific onboarding fee (assumed ₹2–4 L) and 6 months of salaries and rent for 2–3 staff until commissions build (₹3–5 L).

    Unit-economics model · Sep 2026

  • Commission income of a typical store

    ₹1.5–4 L a month*

Assumes ₹30–60 L of monthly bookings, mostly holiday packages, at an effective commission of about 5–7% to the store (flights earn far less, packages more). MakeMyTrip publishes neither commission rates nor store sales; a store below this range struggles to cover rent and 2–3 salaries.

CCI penalty for anti-competitive hotel-platform practices

In October 2022 the Competition Commission of India fined MakeMyTrip-Goibibo ₹223.48 Cr, finding that price-parity conditions and an arrangement with OYO led to rival hotel chains being delisted. The order also directed fair, non-discriminatory platform access for hotels. MakeMyTrip and redBus India appealed to the NCLAT in Nov 2022; the appeal is pending and enforcement of the penalty is stayed after a 10% deposit (Form 20-F, FY2026).

Indian company's FY25 profit below an FY24 lifted by a one-off tax credit

Filings compiled by Tracxn show MakeMyTrip (India) Ltd's FY25 revenue rose 27% to ₹6,948 Cr and EBITDA rose 40% to ₹1,104 Cr, while profit came in at ₹815 Cr against ₹1,571 Cr in FY24. FY24 profit exceeded EBITDA, in line with the one-time recognition of $126.1 million of deferred tax assets that MakeMyTrip's annual report records for Q4 FY24, so the fall reflects that one-off tax item rather than weaker operations. The company lost money every year from FY19 to FY22.

Group profit fell in FY2026 on convertible-note interest, not operations

MakeMyTrip Limited's FY2026 profit was $51.7 million against $95.3 million a year earlier, mainly because interest on the $1,437.5 million of convertible notes due 2030 (raised to buy back Trip.com's shares) rose by $74.4 million and foreign-exchange losses grew. Operating results rose 30% to $156.0 million. The notes stay outstanding until 2030, so the interest cost recurs; the pattern continued in Apr–Jun 2026, when quarterly profit was $9.1 million against $25.8 million.

About the Brand

Brand USP

A walk-in MakeMyTrip store selling holidays, flights, hotels, cruises and forex on MakeMyTrip's booking platform.

Parent CompanyMakeMyTrip Limited (Nasdaq: MMYT)
HeadquartersGurugram, Haryana
MakeMyTrip is an Indian online travel company founded by Deep Kalra, operating since 2000 and listed on Nasdaq since August 2010. Alongside its app and website it sells through franchisee-owned MakeMyTrip travel stores, which mainly sell holiday packages but also book flights, hotels, corporate travel, cruises and forex. Its FY2026 annual report (Form 20-F) counts 108 franchisee-owned stores across India as of 31 March 2026. The franchise is a commission-based retail travel store run by the franchisee from a commercial premises in a high-footfall area (not from home). MakeMyTrip charges a region-specific onboarding fee, supplies a standard store design that the partner fits out, and provides training, booking technology, a dedicated relationship manager, a performance dashboard and local marketing support. Agreements run for five years and are renewed every five years; the 20-F describes them as non-exclusive, with a limited, revocable licence to use the platform. Each store gets sales targets, and a franchise cannot be sold if the owner exits. No prior travel experience is required. MakeMyTrip does not publish the investment, the onboarding fee amount, commission rates, store size or payback figures. The ₹12–25 L investment shown here is our own estimate (fit-out, rent deposit, an assumed onboarding fee and six months of running costs). The store network has also shrunk: MakeMyTrip said it began 2023 with 146 active franchisees and aimed for 220, but reported 108 stores in March 2026 (its store locator lists 129 entries). Other points to weigh: in Oct 2022 the Competition Commission of India fined MakeMyTrip-Goibibo ₹223.48 Cr for anti-competitive hotel-platform practices; its annual report (Jul 2026) says the appeal is pending before the NCLAT and the penalty is stayed. Customer reviews on Trustpilot average 1.2/5, mostly over refunds and service. The group's FY2026 profit fell to $51.7 million from $95.3 million because of interest on convertible notes raised to buy back Trip.com's shares, while operating profit rose. None of these company figures tell you what a store earns; ask existing franchisees for their real numbers.

Why invest in MakeMyTrip?

- The franchisor group reported FY2026 revenue of $1,044.0 million (up 6.7%) and operating profit of $156.0 million (up 30%); net profit fell to $51.7 million on interest for convertible notes (Form 20-F) - Stores sell holiday packages, flights, hotels, corporate travel, cruises and forex on MakeMyTrip's booking technology, with a dedicated relationship manager and business dashboard - No prior travel-industry experience required; MakeMyTrip provides a standard store design, training and local sales and marketing support

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total investment for a MakeMyTrip franchise?
An estimated ₹12 lakh–₹25 lakh. Estimate — MakeMyTrip doesn't publish its investment. FranchiseChuno estimate built from store fit-out, rent deposit, the unpublished onboarding fee and early working capital.
What training does MakeMyTrip provide?
Initial training after the agreement is signed, followed by regular training, full training and development support and access to market insights.
Can I sell my MakeMyTrip franchise if I want to exit?
No. MakeMyTrip's franchise FAQ says the franchise can't be sold by the franchisee on exit, so the money put into the store can't be recovered through a sale.
Do I get an exclusive territory?
No. MakeMyTrip's FY2026 annual report (Form 20-F) describes its franchise agreements as non-exclusive, with a limited, revocable licence to use its platform for five years.
How does a MakeMyTrip franchisee earn money?
Through commission on the holidays, flights, hotels, cruises and forex it sells; MakeMyTrip calls it an 'attractive commission structure' but publishes no rates. Stores also get sales targets tied to retention, transaction value and profitability.
Is MakeMyTrip's franchise network growing?
Not recently. MakeMyTrip said it began 2023 with 146 active franchisees and aimed for 220 by year-end; its FY2026 annual report counts 108 franchisee-owned stores at 31 March 2026.
Is the Indian franchisor company financially healthy?
On its filings, the franchisor company is profitable: Tracxn's data shows MakeMyTrip (India) Ltd earned ₹6,948 Cr revenue and ₹815 Cr profit in FY25 and is compliant at the registrar. That says nothing about what a store earns; ask existing franchisees for their real numbers.
