Fatburger Franchise

Food & BeverageEst. 1952Beverly Hills, California, USA

US burger chain from 1952, offered in India only as development rights. No Indian outlet; its former owner went bankrupt in 2026 and lenders bought it.

About This Listing

Fatburger has no outlets in India. Its store locator (Oct 2026) lists 156 restaurants in 12 countries, none in India, and its only Indian restaurant, at Cyber Hub in Gurgaon, is listed as permanently closed. Its owner, OHG Brands, says franchise territories are available internationally and its enquiry form accepts applicants from India for single or multi-unit development, but it publishes no India terms. Fatburger's earlier India deals (2013 and 2019) were development deals for a region or the country, so in practice India is open only to a country or area developer, not to someone wanting one outlet.

  1. Speak to at least 3 franchisees who have run an outlet for 2+ years and see their actual monthly sales and profit — a franchisor making money doesn't mean its franchisees do.
  2. Get a written, itemised cost breakdown — the brand hasn't published one.
  3. Ask for the one-time franchise fee in writing, and whether any part is refundable.

Our Estimates

FranchiseChuno estimate

Fatburger doesn't publish these, so here is our best read of the market and how we got there. They are our estimates, not the brand's figures — use them to plan, then confirm the real numbers in writing.

  • Taking India development rights and opening the first three Fatburger restaurants

    ₹4–8 Cr*

OHG Brands publishes no international fee. Assumptions: three opening restaurants at our per-restaurant estimate of ₹75 L–₹1.6 Cr (₹2.3–4.8 Cr); an assumed country or area development fee of roughly US$120,000–300,000 (about ₹1–2.5 Cr at ₹85 per US$), which is our judgement, not a published figure; and ₹50 L–₹1 Cr for training travel, supply-chain set-up for approved products and launch marketing. That is about ₹4–8 Cr, a little below The Pizza Company's ₹5–10 Cr master floor because Fatburger units are smaller quick-service sites, not full-service restaurants. The 2019 India deal committed to 60 restaurants over 10 years, so the full schedule would cost far more.

    Analyst judgement Ā· Oct 2026

  • One Fatburger restaurant in an Indian metro (if India rights become available)

    ₹75 L–₹1.6 Cr*

Based on OHG Brands' stated 800–2,250 sq ft unit and a 1,000–2,000 sq ft Indian mall or high-street site: fit-out and full grill kitchen at about ₹5,000–6,500 per sq ft (₹50 L–₹1.3 Cr), rent deposits of ₹10–20 L, and pre-opening costs and working capital of ₹10–15 L. It excludes any franchise or development fee, which Fatburger does not publish for India, and any master-franchise payment.

About the Brand

Brand USP

A Los Angeles burger brand dating from 1952 whose locator lists 156 restaurants across 12 countries, but none in India.

Parent CompanyOHG Brands (FBG Bid Co. LLC)
HeadquartersBeverly Hills, California, USA
Fatburger is a US fast-casual burger chain founded in Los Angeles in 1952 by Lovie Yancey. It sells cooked-to-order beef burgers, onion rings, fries and hand-scooped shakes. Its own store locator lists 156 restaurants in Oct 2026: 66 in the US, 62 in Canada and the rest in Mexico, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia. Its franchise page claims 155 franchised units. Fatburger has no restaurant in India. A 2013 deal with Delhi-based VAZZ Foods produced one restaurant at Cyber Hub, Gurgaon, which is now listed as permanently closed. A 2019 plan with Franglobal Advisors for 60 co-branded restaurants in India produced no outlet we could find. Its owner, OHG Brands, says territories are available internationally, and India appears in its enquiry form, so India is in practice open to a country or area developer. It publishes a 6% royalty on net sales and an ideal size of 800–2,250 sq ft for its general programme, but no investment, fee, term or territory for India. Our own estimate for taking India development rights and opening the first three restaurants is ₹4–8 Cr, and about ₹75 L–₹1.6 Cr for each restaurant. These are only our estimates. What to watch: Fatburger's former parent, FAT Brands Inc., and its subsidiaries, including Fatburger North America, Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US on 26 Jan 2026. The court approved the sale of Fatburger and most of the other brands to a lender group, FBG Bid Co., on 19 May 2026; the sale closed on 16 Jun 2026 and the group now trades as OHG Brands. The court confirmed a plan to liquidate what was left of FAT Brands on 27 Jul 2026. Its former chief executive had faced federal criminal charges over an alleged US$47 M loan scheme; prosecutors dropped them in Jul 2025. FAT Brands lost money every year from 2017 to 2024, including a net loss of US$189.8 M (about ₹1,589 Cr) in 2024. The new owner has not published an India plan. Anyone offered Fatburger rights in India should get the written development agreement, check which company signs it, and speak to existing international franchisees.

Why invest in Fatburger?

- Fatburger dates from 1952 and its own locator lists 156 restaurants in 12 countries (Oct 2026) - Its owner says territories are available internationally and publishes a 6% of net sales royalty and an 800–2,250 sq ft ideal unit size - A court-approved sale on 16 Jun 2026 moved Fatburger out of FAT Brands' Chapter 11 to the lender-owned OHG Brands

A profitable franchisor doesn't mean profitable franchisees. These are the company's numbers, not an outlet's. A franchisor can grow on fees and supplies while outlets struggle — talk to existing franchisees and see their accounts before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total investment for a Fatburger franchise?
An estimated ₹400 lakh–₹800 lakh. Estimate — Fatburger doesn't publish its investment. This is a rough range for taking India development rights: a rights or development fee plus the first three restaurants and launch costs. The full development schedule a master partner signs up to would cost more over time.
What training does Fatburger provide?
OHG Brands says it trains a franchisee's key staff at a designated training restaurant, covering customer service, restaurant operations, management and safety, and continues training through opening.
