Who Should Invest at This Level

Experienced professionals, existing business owners diversifying, and investors planning to run the outlet through a manager. At this level you can look at larger food outlets, bigger coaching centres, salons and branded retail stores.

Financing This Investment

Mudra's Tarun Plus tier (above ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh) is only for borrowers who have already taken and repaid a Tarun loan (PIB, Oct 2024), so many first-time franchisees at this level use a bank or NBFC business term loan, or a loan against property if they own one. CGTMSE, a government credit-guarantee scheme, lets lenders give micro and small enterprises loans without collateral — ask your bank whether your loan can be covered and on what terms.

Returns: What to Expect

We don't publish typical returns for this budget. Each listing shows the brand's stated ROI or payback, labelled as its claim, and category pages show the spread of those claims among brands whose terms we've checked. Our view: build your own projection from rent quotes and existing franchisees' actual sales, then compare it with the brand's. Watch the terms: ROI is yearly profit as a share of your total investment; a profit margin is profit as a share of sales; payback is the months until your cumulative profit equals what you put in; and operating break-even (the month the outlet stops losing money) is not payback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about franchise investments under ₹20 lakh

Can I run a ₹20 lakh franchise with a manager?
Some brands allow it; others insist the franchisee runs the outlet personally. Check the franchise agreement. Either way, expect to be closely involved for the first several months, and ask manager-run franchisees how their results compare.
How many staff will I need?
It depends on the format and hours. Ask the brand for the staffing plan of an existing outlet, then check it with that outlet's franchisee — and price salaries at local rates.
What territory will I get?
It depends on the brand. Get the territory defined in the agreement as a radius or a list of PIN codes, and check whether company-owned outlets and online sales are covered.
When should I think about a second unit?
Our view: only once the first outlet has been reliably cash-positive for a good stretch and runs without you in it every day. Ask whether the brand charges a lower fee for additional units — some do, many don't.
