The best franchise business idea for you depends less on the brand and more on what you already bring to the table: a shop counter, a 200 sq ft storefront, a ground-floor property, a pharmacy licence, or a workshop. We checked current investment figures for six real franchise formats across six sectors, and in almost every case the published numbers disagreed with each other by 50% or more. Below are the ideas, grouped by the asset each one actually needs, with the honest range of what sources report and where they conflict.

Six franchise ideas, sorted by the asset you already own

PharmacyApollo PharmacyA registered pharmacist and at least 10 sq m₹5–10 lakh (small format) to ₹30–40 lakh
Multi-brand car servicemyTVSWorkshop space and mechanical know-how₹32–56 lakh

None of these ranges is tight. That is the finding.

If you already have a shop: add a counter, not a franchise

The cheapest idea on this list is not really a franchise at all. PolicyBazaar's POSP program charges no registration fee, according to the company's own agent pages. You complete 15 hours of mandatory online training and clear the IRDAI certification exam, then sell motor, health and life policies on commission. For a kirana, mobile recharge or travel shop owner who already has walk-in footfall, it is a revenue line with close to zero setup cost. The catch is that income is purely commission-driven, so it works as an add-on to an existing business far better than as a standalone livelihood.

If you have a small storefront: laundry or chai

Two very different categories fit a shop of under 400 sq ft, and both show how wildly published costs vary for the same brand.

UClean describes a typical store at around 250 sq ft, with some formats as small as 150 sq ft. Third-party breakdowns we checked put the total investment anywhere from ₹10 lakh to ₹30 lakh, with the franchise fee quoted at ₹3 lakh on one listing and ₹5–10 lakh on another. One detailed source splits it by format instead: roughly ₹15–20 lakh for a 250–300 sq ft Express store and ₹25–30 lakh for a 350–400 sq ft Premium store. Royalty is consistently reported at 5% of revenue, and payback at 18–24 months. That split by store format is probably the real explanation for the spread: when one site quotes the smallest format and another quotes the largest without saying so, a buyer comparing the two sees what looks like a contradiction but is actually two different businesses sharing a single brand name, which is exactly why you should ask the franchisor which format a quoted figure refers to before you trust any number at all.

Chai Sutta Bar needs even less floor space, 150–200 sq ft, but more money: sources place total investment at ₹18–30 lakh, with a franchise fee of ₹6–8 lakh. The chain started with one outlet in Indore and now reports 600+ outlets in 370+ cities, plus locations in Dubai and Oman.

If you have a larger ground-floor property: a preschool

Preschools are one of the few franchise ideas where owning the building changes the maths completely. Kidzee needs roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft, ideally on the ground floor with outdoor play access, which is expensive to rent but already sunk if you own it. The most commonly cited cost is ₹15–16 lakh, with a wider band of ₹10–20 lakh across sources.

Even the network size is disputed: one source cites 1,900+ Kidzee centres across 750+ cities, another cites 2,500+ across 600+ cities.

The category itself is growing. Industry estimates put India's preschool market at USD 4.6 billion in 2024, projected to reach USD 11.0 billion by 2033.

If you or a family member is a pharmacist: a pharmacy

A pharmacy franchise is gated by regulation before it is gated by money. Under India's drug licensing rules, a retail licence in Form 20 or Form 21 requires premises of at least 10 square metres and a registered pharmacist (D.Pharm or B.Pharm) present on site. Applications go through the Online National Drugs Licensing System. Without the pharmacist, the brand is irrelevant.

Apollo Pharmacy's reported costs show the widest spread of any idea here: some sources put a small-format store at ₹5–10 lakh, while others say ₹30–40 lakh once stock (₹10–12 lakh) and interiors (₹15–20 lakh) are included. Treat any single number with suspicion.

If you have a workshop: multi-brand car service

myTVS is the highest-ticket idea on this list, at ₹32–56 lakh depending on city tier and workshop size. It is also the most franchise-dependent: the company has said 90% of its outlets are franchise-owned, and it announced a target of 2,500 touchpoints by 2026 after crossing 1,000 service centres. For an existing independent garage owner, converting to a branded network is a very different bet than building from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest franchise business idea in India?

Commission-based agent programs such as PolicyBazaar's POSP, which charge no registration fee and need only online training and an IRDAI exam. They work best as an add-on to a shop you already run.

Why do franchise cost figures for the same brand differ so much?

Brands often run several store formats, and aggregator sites quote one without saying which. UClean's Express and Premium formats, for example, differ by roughly ₹10 lakh.

Do I need a licence to open a pharmacy franchise?

Yes. A retail drug licence (Form 20/21) requires a registered pharmacist on site and at least 10 square metres of premises, regardless of which brand you franchise.
