  1. Speak to at least 3 franchisees who have run an outlet for 2+ years and see their actual monthly sales and profit — a franchisor making money doesn't mean its franchisees do.
  2. Ask for the one-time franchise fee in writing, and whether any part is refundable.
  3. Ask for the royalty and any marketing-fund fee, and how they're calculated (on sales or profit).

About the Brand

Brand USP

MedPlus says it is India's second-largest pharmacy retailer; it runs 4,812 of its 5,476 stores itself and had 664 franchisee stores at Jun 2026.

HeadquartersHyderabad, Telangana
MedPlus is a pharmacy chain run by MedPlus Health Services Ltd, a Hyderabad company listed on BSE and NSE; its stores are operated through its subsidiary Optival Health Solutions. It sells prescription and over-the-counter medicines, its own private-label drugs and household products, and also runs diagnostics, an online pharmacy and an app. MedPlus started in 2006 with 48 stores in Hyderabad. Its July 2026 investor presentation counts 5,476 pharmacies at 30 Jun 2026, of which 4,812 are company-owned and company-operated and 664 are franchisee stores, in 850+ cities and towns; the largest city counts in that presentation are Hyderabad (519), Chennai (472), Bengaluru (439) and Kolkata (315). MedPlus is actively adding franchisees: 131 of its 146 net new stores in Apr–Jun 2026 were franchise stores, and it guides for 800 net additions in FY2026-27, about half franchised. Its partner pages invite existing medical-store owners to convert their shop and entrepreneurs to open a new one. A separate MedPlus page says setting up a franchisee shop costs ₹25–30 L, and offers pharmacists a cheaper route: work two years as a MedPlus pharmacist in Hyderabad, then take a franchise in the Telugu states for an investment of ₹5 L. MedPlus is also handing some company stores (24 in Jun 2026) to long-serving staff as franchisees. It does not publish a franchise fee, royalty, margin, contract length or territory. What to watch: management called the franchise model 'still in an experimental kind of stage' in Jul 2026. 27 franchisees withdrew in Apr–Jun 2026 alone, the franchise stores that closed were on average only about eight months old (all closures averaged four years), and the CFO spoke of an 'expectation mismatch' among first-time owners; MedPlus says it is now helping with fees in the first year. Franchise stores earn MedPlus lower margins than its own stores, and 1,406 of its 4,812 company stores ran below 5% store EBITDA in the same quarter. Drug regulators suspended the licences of 22 of its subsidiary's stores for one to fifteen days in orders received in May–Jun 2026, and further suspensions at Karnataka stores were disclosed in Jul and Aug 2026. In May 2016 MedPlus announced 1,100 franchise stores in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh by that year-end; ten years later it reports 664 franchise stores in all. MedPlus Health Services is profitable (₹219.6 Cr profit after tax in FY2025-26), but that says nothing about a franchisee's earnings, so talk to existing MedPlus franchisees before signing.

Why invest in MedPlus?

- MedPlus had 5,476 pharmacies at 30 Jun 2026, 664 of them franchisee stores, according to its investor presentation. - Its partner pages accept both new stores and conversions of existing medical stores, and offer pharmacists a ₹5 L route after two years on staff. - MedPlus Health Services is listed and profitable: ₹6,892 Cr revenue and ₹219.6 Cr profit after tax in FY2025-26 (company figures, not franchisee earnings).
